The week between Christmas and New Year's is peak junk season in Anaheim. Trees dry out, gift boxes pile up, and half the appliances you got as gifts have replaced older ones that now need to go. Christmas Trees: The 3-Day Rule
Once a tree stops absorbing water, it dries fast — especially in SoCal's dry December air. A dry tree is a fire hazard, and Anaheim Fire & Rescue puts out at least a handful of Christmas tree fires every year. The rule: take your tree down within 3 days of it going dry.
The City of Anaheim's Christmas tree recycling program typically runs curbside collection during the first two weeks of January — check current dates on the city site. Trees are chipped into mulch and reused. Rules:
- Remove all lights, ornaments, tinsel, and tree stand
- Cut trees over 6 feet in half
- Flocked trees are usually not accepted (check with your hauler)
- Artificial trees are not curbside recyclable — donate or bag as trash
The Wrapping Paper & Gift Box Mountain
Not all wrapping paper is recyclable. The EPA's guide on holiday recycling lays out what belongs where. The short version:
- Plain paper wrapping — recycle in curbside blue bin
- Foil, metallic, or plastic-coated wrap — trash (do not recycle)
- Tissue paper — technically compostable, but check curbside guidelines
- Cardboard boxes — flatten and recycle (never in the blue bin whole)
- Bubble wrap and packing peanuts — return to a UPS Store, they reuse them
